Key Facts about San Juan de Dios College

1577-1578: Foundation
Fifteen Franciscan missionaries arrived in the Philippines, including Fray Juan Clemente, who studied medical uses of plants, caring for the sick and poor. He started a dispensary in Intramuros.

1596-1656: Transfer of Stewardship
The Confraternity of Mercy took charge in 1596. The confraternity helped solicit financial support for the hospital.

1656-1865: Hospitaller-Brothers
The Hospitaller Brothers of St. John of God in 1656, who devoted themselves to the care of the sick, took over the facility and transformed it into a hospital, hospitality center, and formation house. They renamed the facility as Hospital de San Juan de Dios de Manila. The Hospitallers recruited locals to join the Confraternity of St. Joseph, of which Apolinario de Cruz (Hermano Pule) was a member.

1865-1866: The Daughters of Charity
QUeen Isabela II of Spain decreed that the administration of the royal hospital be given to the Daughters of Charity, who also took other facilities, including schools thereafter.

1880s: José Rizal
National hero José Rizal received four years of practical medical training at the hospital during his studies, linking the institution to a pivotal figure in Philippine history. In collaboration with the UST Hospital, the hospital was known for training health workers.

1913: School of Nursing School
The School of Nursing was opened to meet the need for scientifically trained nurses, under Dr. Benito Valdez, the Hospital Director and Administrator.

1920-1940: Growth of the School
The School of Nursing admitted 130 students in 1920, while the hospital served as an affiliate for the UST College of Medicine and Surgery.

1945: Destruction
During the Liberation of Manila,
the whole complex was completely destroyed together with the hospital's School of Nursing.

1952: Relocation
Following its destruction, the school together with the hospital was also relocated to its present site along Roxas Boulevard. In 1953, the new hospital was inaugurated, and the School of Nursing reopened under Sr. Tarciana Triñanes, DC.

1965-1969: Medical Technology
The school offered BS in Medical Technology (BSMT) and opened a Liberal Arts course. In 1969, the BSMT program obtained government recognition,

1973: San Juan de Dios College
The School of Nursing was converted into San Juan de Dios College, paving the way for more future program college offerings,

1991: Officially a Foundation
San Juan de Dios Hospital and College was officially registered with the SEC as San Juan de Dios Educational Foundation Inc. (SJDEFI), a non-stock, non-profit organization.

1993 Physical Therapy
The College opened the BS in Physical Therapy and constructed the St. Louise de Marillac Building.

2001-2003 International Standards
The Foundation earned ISO 9001:2000 quality certification, and subsequently IMS Certification integrating Quality, Occupational Health & Safety with ISO 9001, 14001 and OHSAS 18001.

2003-2012 PAASCU
The Nursing College obtained Level 1 PAASCU Accreditation and in 2012 Level Accreditation, including that of Physical Therapy.

2015-2016 Senior High School
The College got permit to offer Sr. High School, with the subsequent opening of the Sr. HS Department.

2016-2020: More Programs and Accreditations
The school expanded and offered several programs such as BS in Hospitality Management, BS Entrepreneurship & BS in Office Administration, and granting of Level I PAASCU Accreditation to the Hospitality Program.

2020-2025: Covid-19 Pandemic to Post-Pandemic
Due to the Pandemic lockdown, the College shifted to online learning and academic teaching delivery via Google Suite and Learning Management System (LMS).Meanwhile, employees were given financial assistance and were maintained during the pandemic. In 2021,  it obtained Safety Seal Certification from CHED.
The College continues to get  PAASCU Accreditations for other succeeding programs.
