A Legacy Now and Beyond. A Miracle Rising.

The Miracle Building is more than a vision—it is our continuing response to the perpetual call of God that has stayed with us in hundreds of years: a story of His enduring love for the afflicted, the poor and the vulnerable iconized in the Sacred Heart of Jesus -- merciful and compassionate.

Our story began in 1578 when our pioneer and founder,  Bro. Juan Clemente, OFM, inspired by St. Francis of Assisi, built a humble dispensary for the sick and the poor. It came to be a sanctuary for the natives of Manila, especially those living outside of Intramuros. Through many upheavals and disasters—colonial rules, revolts and wars, fires and earthquakes, economic hardships, and most recently, the global COVID-19 pandemic—San Juan de Dios Hospital and College stood firm. Amidst uncertainties and anxieties of generation, the dual-identity institution never wavered in their mission. They were present, offering compassion, hope, healing and learning, especially in the dark moments of our nation’s history.

In 1913, built on this legacy of competence and compassion, the College formally began as a school for nursing, pursuing a professional science-based path. Dedicated to professional excellence, San Juan de Dios College expanded its programs, molding generations of professional workers, and developing them to be servant-leaders in their own fields. Students studied in the institution not only to gain knowledge and competence, but to learn about the challenging realities of poverty, particularly the lack of access to basic services, that include education, healthcare, among others. The school focused on elevating the sense of human dignity of everyone against social exclusion, discrimination, abuse, and corruption. They were taught about the value of human dignity, social inclusiveness, solidarity, social commitment, and fortitude in charity and service to others.

Since the 1990s, the Hospital and College has stood united as San Juan de Dios Educational Foundation, Inc. (SJDEFI)—a living institution with dual Vincentian ministries for education and healthcare.

Now, a new complex is about to rise in our midst: a sanctuary for healing and learning, where patients will receive world-class medical services, and where students will learn in an excellent environment and system of training, education and research. Through to our history, we aspire to be the best of we are as modern institution providing compassionate superior healthcare and educational services.
